Landfill Gas Generation Project
Peterborough Utilities Inc. (PUI) has executed a Feed-In-Tariff (FIT) Contract with the Ontario Power Authority for the 2 MW Bensfort Road Landfill Gas Generation project. See the April 9th Press Release for more information.
Landfill gas is the natural byproduct of the decomposition of solid waste and is comprised primarily of methane and carbon dioxide, both of which are significant greenhouse gases that contribute to global warming. In fact, methane (CH4) is over 20 times more effective in trapping heat in the atmosphere than carbon dioxide (CO2).
A landfill gas (LFG) generation project captures landfill gas through a network of wells and collector pipes placed within the landfill site and delivers the gas to one or more reciprocating engines for combustion and the generation of electricity.
PUI has entered into agreements with the Corporations of the County of Peterborough and City of Peterborough to lease lands within the Peterborough County/City Waste Management Facility to build, own and operate the LFG generation facility. The County/City will continue to own and operate the landfill site.
PUI is in the process of obtaining Renewable Energy Approval (REA) for the project and recently held the first of two public information sessions on the project. Project notifications, reports and the information presented at the first public information session are provided in the following links:
