Trent Rapids Generating Station

Peterborough Utilities Inc. is pleased to announce that Trent Rapids Power Corporation (TRPC) successfully completed and placed the Trent Rapids Generating Station into commercial operation on December 31, 2009.

Peterborough Utilities Inc. is a partner (50%) in Trent Rapids Power Corporation.

The Trent Rapids Generating Station is a new 8.0 MW run-of-the-river hydroelectric generating facility on the Otonabee River adjacent to Locks 22 and 23. The project includes the following key features:

  • Intake structure located adjacent to the west end of the Lock 23 dam;
  • A 1,050 m long power canal on the west bank of the river between the Lock 23 dam and Lock 22 dam;
  • Powerhouse containing two 4.0 MW ECOBulb turbines located about 100 m downstream of the Lock 22 dam; and
  • 44 kV substation and power line injecting energy into the local distribution grid of Peterborough Distribution Inc.

Construction of the project commenced in April 2008 and completed in December 2009. The recently completed facility will produce and inject approximately 30,000 MWh annually into the local electrical distribution system of Peterborough Distribution Inc.

The Trent Rapids Generating Station has a Renewable Energy Standard Offer Program (RESOP) Contract with the Ontario Power Authority (OPA) for a 20-year term. This green energy project will provide the electricity needs of approximately 3,000 homes and offset 20,000 to 30,000 tons of carbon dioxide annually.
