Peterborough Utilities Dam 24 Hydro

Contract Cancellation

On July 16, 2018 the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) gave notice to Peterborough Utilities Inc., and its subsidiaries, advising that it was canceling energy procurement contracts for a number of Peterborough Utilities projects including the Dam 24 Hydro project.  This cancellation was as a result of a directive issued by the Ministry of Energy and Northern Development & Mines.  In addition to the cancellation contracts, the IESO also issued a Stop Work Notice for those same projects, meaning all work on the project must cease.  At this time, Peterborough Utilities is complying with all notices issued by the IESO, in accordance with the terms of the recently canceled contracts.  For a list of the affected projects, please consult the Ministry of Energy and Northern Development and Mines website.

Peterborough Utilities Inc. (PUI) is one of four major business groups within the Peterborough Utilities Group of Companies.  PUI has been responsible for the management of electrical generation and continues to pursue projects focused on renewable and clean energy resources including waterpower, solar and bio gas.

Currently PUI owns and operates approximately 40 Megawatts (MW) of installed capacity including solar, biogas and water power facilities.

On March 9th, 2016 Peterborough Utilities Hydro 24 LP, a limited partnership between PUI and the Curve Lake Economic Development Corporation, was awarded a generation contract by the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) through their Large Renewable Procurement (LRP) program for the construction of a new water power project located adjacent to Lock 24 in Selwyn Township, south of the community of Lakefield, Ontario.  For more information on the LRP program, please consult the IESO website at

Currently PUI is proposing to design, build and operate a 2.5 to 3.5 Megawatt water power project located in the Township of Selwyn, in the County of Peterborough, at or near Lock 24 of the Trent-Severn Waterway.  It is important to note that detailed planning, environmental assessments and consultation will occur as part of the project's initial activities.  This also includes the completion of all permitting and approval processes with municipal, provincial and federal agencies, including Parks Canada.

Project Community Liaison Committee

In response to requests from local citizens and businesses, Peterborough Utilities Inc. has established a Community Liaison Committee for the Dam 24 Hydro project, in order to continue our dialog about the project with the general community.
The committee has been developed with the assistance of local municipality officials, and includes members representing local interest groups, businesses and the general public.  While meetings are not open to the general public, minutes and agendas are available for review through the links provided below.
Peterborough Utilities Inc. is committed to continual public engagement about this project.  We encourage members of the public to contact us directly to discuss the project, or any concerns or questions you may have.  We also encourage the public to forward their questions or concerns to members of the Community Liaison Committee.
